Niigata

Niigata prefecture played an important role in foreign trade for Japan. Niigata port was one of the first ports in the country that opened its gates to foreigners, and plays a huge role in international commerce, especially with Korea and Russia. The current Niigata prefecture was originally two provinces prior to the Meiji Restoration, Echigo province and Sado province. Niigata is most famous for providing high quality koshihikari rice, jaw-dropping coastal views, and amazing ski resorts. It also hosts one of the biggest summer fireworks festivals in the entire country.

Living in this prefecture for two years, I can say that Niigata is a prefecture you can enjoy all year round. There is something to do during any season you visit. I particularly love the winter season because the elegant white snow blankets the mountain range, creating a picture perfect view that is nothing short of a magical winter wonderland. In this gallery, on a trip around the different parts of Niigata prefecture at a speed that is faster than the Genbi Shinkansen!
